HGTV Living Room Reveal

HGTV Living Room Reveal

It’s been nearly 6 months since five days of chaos ensued at our new house.  It was an unforgettable experience and we have a beautiful room to remember it by.  I blogged about the experience here.

Sadly HGTV ended up passing on the show.  *tears*  Layla and Kevin are such a sweet and talented couple I couldn’t have imagined that the show wouldn’t get picked up, but they explain it more over at The Lettered Cottage.

Our living room is A-MA-ZING and we had such a great time with the whole shabang…..BUT, I must admit….I was so nervous about being on TV!  You know how you hear your voice on a recording, then you immediately cringe and think “is that what I really sound like?!”.  Well, that’s pretty much how I felt about being on TV.  I am so thankful for the experience, though, and met some wonderful people along the way!

Let’s take a look back one last time of the room before:

And here’s the room as of today!

Isn’t she beautiful?  When we were filming, Layla showed me the design of the room on an iPad.  Alex and I were both shocked to see red doors leading out to our screened in porch.  We had talked about my love of gray neutral colors with a crisp & clean look which was  achieved after the cleaners dublin service did their job.  I didn’t expect RED.  I must say, I could kiss Layla’s feet for pushing our design boundaries!!!  The wall of built-ins with the red doors are my absolute favorite part of the room.

Speaking of built-ins…they are such a deal!  They’re Ikea Billy Bookcases made in to built-ins!  They just secured them to the wall, popped off the old crown molding and placed it at top.  Wonderful!  I was also very happy to see some doors….you know, to hide the not-so-pretty stuff I don’t want laying around.

Pardon the blurriness. This table is such a great accent to the room. It really helps section off the room appropriately.  It wasn’t red when they got it, but one of the bloggers who came out to help spruced it up with this great red.

Didn’t they do such a great job with the picture wall?  The day of the finale was me and Alex’s one year anniversary and we had yet to print a single wedding photo. Layla made sure to take care of that.

I LOVE the coffee table!  When we came in for the reveal it was the first thing I saw.  Layla & Kevin got it from Southern Accents in Cullman, AL.  I will make it to that store some day in my lifetime!  They have great reclaimed pieces that I’d love to get my hands on to use throughout the house.

Here are some close-ups at the great, unique pieces in the room:

I don’t know why, but I am so in love with this little moss and the container it’s in.  Seriously, my favorite accessory in the room.

This chair was fabulously re-upholstered by a blogger who came out to help.  I’m sitting in it right now.  It’s so dang comfortable.

Isn’t the mantle succulent?  I could just eat it up!       Okay, not really.  But you get it.

Last but not least, here’s Abby.  She was patiently (or not) waiting outside for me to finish taking picutres…otherwise a blurry wag of a tail would be in every single shot.  Thank you, Abby!

What great memories we’ll have forever.

  1. Hi Emily,
I ventured over here from The Lettered Cottage to see the rest of your living room. It looks wonderful! The layout of the room looks very similar to ours (long- but we don’t have those gorgeous French doors), so I was wondering if you could share the dimensions of the room and the couch with me. I want to redecorate with a sectional, but I’m not sure if it will look right. Thank you so much!

    • Sorry I’m so late getting back to you! The living room is about 14×24 ft. The sectional is two pieces, but when put together it’s 8 x 8 ft. Layla actually taught me a great design trick, and that’s to design your space from above. So if you can make an accurate drawing, or use an online space designing tool, and just view the objects in your room as if you were looking down on them, you can see if a piece of furniture will fit with your space or not. I’ve been notorious for having to buy things to see if they fit in a room and I don’t have to do that anymore…I know if it’ll fit or not before I buy!

The sectional is really the best part of the room because it breaks the room up a bit and makes if feel less long.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi Emily! I came upon your livingroom and I just love it! Do you happen to know the paint color of your living room? Thanks! Amber

  3. Hi Emily – Gorgeous makeover! We are finishing up rebuilding our home after we lost it in a fire 18 months ago. I’m using your fireplace as our inspiration. I found a great place online elmwoodreclaimedtimber.com to order a reclaimed mantel at a very decent price (in case any of your readers are interested). Anyhow, I’m curious as to the thickness and depth of your mantel. Thank you!

    • 76 11 5.5

Sorry for the late reply! The dimensions of the mantle are 76″long, 11″ wide, 5.5 inches tall. I hope that helps! Good luck!

  4. Fabulous makeover. It’s been fun to look at your rooms because our home has a very similar layout to yours and was also built in 1986. Lots of ugly wood trim! I’ve managed to get rid of most of it, but my husband doesn’t want it to go in the living room. 🙁

    • Thanks! You know, I’ve seen a few rooms on Pinterest that still have the stained wainscoting and have managed to make it look good. I think it’s tricky but it can be done! I feel like it just ends up being very masculine though…which is probably why your husband wants it to stay!

  5. Just found your site and am loving the kitchen and living room. Just wanted to give a correction on the Southern Accents store location though; it is in Cullman not Coleman, Alabama. Can’t wait to look at the rest of the site.

  6. Can you describe the process of re-doing the wainscoting? Is it faux wainscoting made with trim, or the real thing? Comparing the ‘before’ with the ‘after’, it seems there was more than simply painting involved.

    • Thanks, Steff! I’m not exactly sure where the rug is from. On TheLetteredCottage.net Layla listed the rug source as Anji Mountain Rug Company. I’m just not exactly sure where she bought it, but I do believe World Market has some good jute rugs! Or RugsUSA does as well.

  7. Hi Emily – I found your blog through The Lettered Cottage and just love your living room. We are moving to a new home next month and I am hoping to find a way to incorporate the Halcyon Green somewhere in my home. It’s beautiful! Do you have any idea what color the red is on the sofa table? Thanks for your help!

  8. Love the sectional. I’ve been looking to purchase one but haven’t been impressed with the quality for price. Would u say it is a good buy? Is it good quality? Thx.
